Know anything about British Rumex?

I wonder if anyone could tell me how British species of Rumex (dock) are differentiated? Water dock, broad-leaf dock, curled-leaf dock and sorrel? Apart from appearances what makes these plants able to share the environment ie. do they have different soil moisture threshold etc.?

Know anything about British Rumex?
That's a good question which could be applied to any species within the same genus. Generally they will have different nutritional requirements or thrive in different conditions - for example, broad-leaved dock thrives in eutrophic soils, curled dock likes wetter conditions and sorrel thrives in poorer, more disturbed ground.
Reply:Why not have a look at Wikipedia. I guess though that different types of dock %26amp; sorrel just took different routes at some stage in their evolution and, like many of the other similar plants, now co-exist because that's what's available!

Confused? Please ,if you could enlighten me?

Sorrel? I do not remember that, at any pony club rally? Would I be right to assume they are talking Liver Chestnut?

Confused? Please ,if you could enlighten me?
You are not the only confused one...but its chestnut with a paler mane and tail. We dont have the same names for colours as our overseas colleagues. There was one the other day, Grulla, that floored me! I THINK its a sort of mouse dun but sounds more like a nasty ailment!
Reply:Actually it is chestnut with a red cast. The mane and tail have nothing to do with it. The paler mane and tail is just referred to as flaxen mane and tail. At least in the US. Report It

Reply:Light Chestnut??? Report It

Reply:–noun 1. light reddish-brown.

2. a horse of this color, often with a light-colored mane and tail.

–adjective 3. of the color sorrel.

I had never heard it either but I loked up the dictonary definition and a picture
Reply:just another name for a chestnut horse, but not a liver chestnut.
Reply:I'm pretty sure the AQHA recognizes sorrel as separate from chestnut (I got a free poster of horse colors, and sorrel was specified.), with a sorrel being lighter than a regular chestnut horse. There's a horse at our barn that they call a sorrel, and she's a very light chestnut, although I always refer to her as chestnut. I'm not sure what her papers say.
Reply:Sorrel is chestnut, yes. Sorrel and chestnut are essentially the same exact thing, but I think that 'sorrel' is more of a western term, where 'chestnut' is more english (not trying to offend people!!) It's the same thing with the term 'canter.' In english riding, it's called 'canter' but in western it's called 'loping' but it's the same thing. So basically it's terminology between different riding styles.
Reply:Sorrel is chestnut, but in the quarter horse. I have Morgans %26amp; they are chestnut, not sorrel.
Reply:I think it's more like a bright chestnut with chestnut mane and tail.

Edit - apparently not - it's chestnut.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorrel_(hor...
Reply:While sorrel and chestnut may be considered the same color, they may also be considered a different color. Liver Chestnut can be considered a third color.

Chestnut would be a light, orange brown with a flaxen main and tail:

http://windrosefarmarabians.com/photos/s...

Sorrel - a more reddish brown with a darker mane and tail.

http://www.krugerquarterhorses.com/sorre...

A liver Chestnut is darker yet, but not as dark as a brown horse, often with dapples and unlike a brown, no light points:

http://www.whitehorseacres.com/horses_bi...

A brown horse has no reddish look to him and has lighter brown around the muzzle, eyes and around the flank and belly. Often they look black with lighter points.

(My original link to a brown horse was better, but YA didn't like it.)
Reply:My horse is registered as a sorrel with AQHA...

Reply:Sorrel is one of the most common equine coat colors in horses. While it is usually used to refer to a copper-red shade of chestnut horse, in some places it is used generically in place of the term "chestnut" to describe any reddish horse with a same-color or lighter mane and tail, ranging from reddish-gold to a deep burgundy or chocolate shade. The term probably comes from the color of the flower spike of the sorrel herb.

The term "chestnut" is also used to describe horses of a reddish-brown color. Chestnut is more often used to describe this color in England and on the east coast of the USA, while the term "sorrel" is more common in the Western United States. Some horse enthusiasts insist that chestnut and sorrel are two distinct colorations, but there is no clear consensus on what the distinction is. Some argue that "sorrel" should be used to describe only lighter shades, or shades with a very clear reddish tint, while "chestnut" denotes darker shades or shades with more brown in them. The American Quarter Horse Association, which uses both terms, describes a sorrel as a type of copper-red chestnut, but allows that chestnut is also a correct term.

In terms of equine coat color genetics there is no difference at all. Solid reddish-brown color is a base color of horses, caused by the recessive "e" gene.

Sorrel or chestnut coloration can be distinguished from dun by the fact that a dun horse has a gene that causes slightly washed-out yellowish color, with a darker mane and tail than the rest of its coat, may have bars of darker color on the shoulder and forelegs, and also possesses a narrow, dark line down the middle of the back.

A sorrel and a bay, especially a "blood bay," may be confused with one another. However, all bays have "black points" - a black mane, tail and lower legs. Light-colored sorrels, sometimes called "blond sorrels," especially if they have flaxen manes and tails, may resemble a palomino. However, true palomino coloration is the result of a horse's being heterozygous for the cream dilution gene.

Some say that sorrel is a self color, and should be used to describe only horses whose mane, tail, and legs are the same color as the rest of the coat, with the exception of possible white markings below the knee or hock; others use "sorrel" only for reddish-brown horses with flaxen manes and tails, and use "chestnut" when reddish-brown coloration appears as a self color.[citation needed]

More often than not, the practical difference is usually not in color, but in usage: horses ridden in the Western tradition are more often referred to as sorrel and horses ridden in the English tradition are chestnut. Many organizations simply avoid the whole fuss and choose one of the two terms to denote all reddish or brown colorations that are not bay.
Reply:A sorrel is a type of chestnut that comes in a beautiful reddish brown. They are gorgeous (at least I think so) but in fox trotters they are far too common.

One thing to keep in mind is that various breeds have different names. Arabians simply say chestnut to all shades. In fox trotters the picture Amelia posted would be a light chestnut. The picture Aijerene and Kristina posted would be a typical sorrel color with some horses being more red still.
Reply:Sorrel and chestnut are the same things in most breeds, however a few breed associations recognize them as different colors. I believe that AQHA actually claims a difference with sorrel being the lighter, more orangish-red color that usually has a mane/tail of the same color, or flaxen in the mane/tail, whereas chestnut is the darker red/brownish and can vary into the dark liver chestnut. Typically the chestnuts have darker manes.

Just in generally speaking, you can use them interchangeably, but some breeds, like Thoroughbreds, do not recognize "sorrel" as a color....all would be called "chestnut" regardless of shade. I think sorrel is the term more used for stock breeds, chestnut more for hunter type breeds, etc. Hope this makes sense!
Reply:Sorrel is another word for chestnut.

Its not necessarily a liver chestnut. Actually, it's most often used to describe a more reddish chestnut, such as this one: http://illusivedreams.deviantart.com/art...

Hope to have helped =]
Reply:I never herd that to

But i do belive it is a liver chestnut.

WHAT color should the foal turn out??

i am gonna breed a sorrel quarter horse with a buckskin quarter horse/appaloosa and i think it might turn out like the mother but idk the mother is the sorrel do you no what it might turn out like???

WHAT color should the foal turn out??
If your breeding a Sorrel to a Buckskin you are most likely to get a Buckskin or a Bay. Well that's what mostly came from my experience. However I have heard from friends who Sorrel Stallion (who was bred with a Buckskin Mare) threw a Chestnut and later a Palomino from the same Sire. It would be hard to tell as Appaloosa's have different genes. You should try this site:

Show name for my horse?

I have a 14 year old sorrel QH gelding. He has a star, strip, snip on his nose, and three socks. His registered name is Mr. Boot Scoot Boogey and his barn name is Dudley. I've been using his registered name for his show name for a while now and I think it's time for a change.

Show name for my horse?
I'd register him as "the all star Dudley".But that's just me.
Reply:sence he has a blaze on his face, maybe "Stars And Stripes". you could also do "Dudley's Pride" or "Dudley Fast". just pick something cute.

How much is my horse worth???

my horse is a very calm, gentle horse. she srands for farrier and baths and loves having attention. she comes up to you when she is in the pasture. she is easy to catch and easy to saddle. you can easily saddle her in 5 minutes. she doesn't buck, kick, nor bite you. you can walk underneith her and behind her and make loud noises of all sorts and she will not get scared. she has been doing barrel racing for 3yrs and has had professional training in it. she runs in times of 15 through 18 seconds. she has never came lower than 3rd place at any competition. she has never knocked down a barrel in her entire life. she has been doing jumping for about 2 months now and she can jump up to 3 1/2ft. in just the second week of training she could jump 2ft. she is very pretty and lovable. she doesn't get spooked too easily and is really easy to ride. she is sorrel with 4 white stockings and a white blaze down her face.

i was thinking of selling her. how much do you think she is worth to sell for???

How much is my horse worth???
I would want to know bloodlines, too, and at what level is she running barrels. It would mean a lot more if she is a 1D horse than if she had been entered in local playdays or open shows. It could mean the difference in $2000 and $20,000!
Reply:3,000 is what id sell her for
Reply:I would say $5,000. If she was younger I would $8,000
Reply:seems like a great horse.

If i were you, and i had to sell her/him, i would go for ..

13,000 OBO (or best offer)
Reply:$15000- she sounds very nice, but is older.
Reply:Height? Age? More information! She sounds like a great horse! Goodluck!
Reply:I don't know, but I'd like to see some pictures because my husband is actually looking for a good barrel racing horse. PLEASE contact me!
Reply:why would you sell such an awesome horse? but i am sure you have your reasons i don't know what the market is like in your area so i cant exactly tell you how much she is worth in my area you can find horses like her in the price range $1500 and up,the best thing for you to do is look at other horses for sale in your area that are similar to her and go from there
Reply:If I were you I'd keep her. Why do you want to sell her? She is perfect! Anyways. I think acouple thousands.
Reply:Yes, she sound like a very valuable horse. Spinout980 had a good idea too, a link to a few photos would help in determening a lot.
Reply:Why do you want to sell your horse?
Reply:well it depends where you live, but in az she is worth about $4,000-$5,000.

ask yourself these things too:

is she good on trails

how old is she

does she trailer well

any major health problems.

does she have a good pedigree

is she registered

does she have good ground manners

does she stand when you want to saddle her

how tall is she

what breed

these are things you will want to mabye mention in your ad.
Reply:My oh my why would you want to sell a horse like that? That's a one in a million horse! You didn't really have enough detail. Like the person said above me, you need to know more things such as blood lines because that could REALLY vary your prices.
Reply:Your horse is worth a good home and caring owners, you should let the price be flexible!
Reply:well it is hard without age.bloodline, and what kind of horse she is but i would say if you really want to sell her 1,500-7,000 but you should post another question with a pic you really have to have a pic of her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hope this helps and good luck
Reply:i think she is worth like $ 5000.00 from what youre telling me
Reply:Your horse is worth as much as someone wants to pay.
Reply:Honestly there is no way anyone on here could tell you how much your horse is worth because we don't know her.

To you she could be worth a million... but to someone else she could be worth $500.

It depends on your location, the market for that particular kind of horse there.

Temperment has alot to do with how a horse sells. We on YA dont' know what kind of temperment she has.

How old? What color is she, her height, does she have papers- any good bloodlines- horses with excellent pedigrees can sell for upwards of 45,000 just from thier bloodlines.

What breed is she? Is she good with kids? Can a novice rider handle her or will she require an experienced rider?

Are you going to try and sell her mainly as a barrel horse or a jumper?

Is she struturally correct? Has she been vet checked sound? Does she get along with other horses?

I'm not very "jumper" oriented but know that in that profession some horses can sell and be quit pricey. However I do know the barrel racing aspect of it.

Here are a few question I would ask if i were interested in buying her as a barrel horse.

How long has she been running barrels? Who did she have professional training with? What did THEY say about her?

Does she have a willing attitude when it comes to running? Is she gate sour? Where have you run her? Local playdays or open shows? That makes a big difference when you say 1D or 3D. My horses that are for sale have run at the professional level... we have been on the pro rodeo circut tour for a year now. How long have you owned her? Has she been in any accidents of any sort (I.E. leg caught in fence, run through barbed wire etc.)

What you did tell us about your horse is a GREAT start! What you stated are definately questions i would have asked- does she clip, load, bathe, etc.- These are just SOME questions that i could think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there are ALOT more. There are SOOOO many question that need to be answered when selling horses. It is impossible for us to tell you how much she is worth over the internet and not even seeing this horse! Pictures would obviously help but still we wouldn't be able to give you an accurate price.

I would have a proffessional give you an opinion, maybe a person you barrel race with... or how about the trainer that trained her to barrel race. I'm sure they could give you a more round about answer than we could on here.

And last but not least, prices on horses vary alot with people. Like i said to begin with. She could be worth a million to you but $500 to someone else. I would put a price tag on her that you are happy with, that YOU! think she is worth... how much is she worth to you? If you were buying this horse, how much would you pay for her?

I really hope I helped and you get the answers you are looking for about your horse.

(PS... to get money for a horse is always a good thing... but to me its more about the satisfaction of knowing that that particular horse i sold... went to a great home and will be used to his fullest potential)

Again good luck.

if you can be of any further assistance you can email me. dara_2005_pearce@hotmail.com
Reply:it depends a lot on the breed even with all those characteristics but she is a jumping horse you said so that raises the value to mabey 15 grand and im sure sombody would want a great horse lik that so i would say mabey 15 to 10 grand and she is in barrel competitions so that might raise the price to 17 to 13 grand you would get a lot of money for this horse
Reply:First of all, a horse should not be jumping 3'6 after only 2 months of jumping, maybe free jumping but definitely not with a rider.

I don't really think anyone on here is going to be able to fully answer your question. I would suggest having a trainer or an appraiser come out to your farm and take a look at her, as there are many factors that can bring the value up or down. You might also want to consider finding a top notch barn that takes consignments, as someone is going to be more likely to spend more at a nicer barn than out of someones backyard.
Reply:dont sell your horse because it can be your life saver or friend at times of distree or trouble and if you want to sell it the price can be 2ooooo$ according to its breed or age.

Things I haven't thought about in a while?

Cooking Sunday lunch with Mommy.

Just so the other day memories of shelling peas crossed my mind. I hated those worms but I loved eating the raw peas. Remember cutting those thorny things off the sorrel and getting all that fuzzy stuff in your fingers? Making grapefruit juice with bitters. Cleaning callaloo bush. You had to snap and pull the stem, then take out the sections from between the ribs in the leaf. Back then it was of utmost importance that there be no stem. Picking rice and grating cheese for the macaroni pie. Using that long tube shaped macaroni you can't get here in States. Learning to cut up chicken. My parts were unrecognizable. My first stew chicken. It was sweeet, and I mean that literally. lol. Peeling provision, making potato salad. Mommy passing and taking a taste to check the seasoning. Cutting veggies for fried rice. Music. Always. Good times...

Some of my warmest memories are of playing mas with my Mother. I spent some of my formative years living in the United States while my father attended school. We moved to Trinidad when I was 10 years old. Even though I was born there, coming home was like entering a strange new world.

My mother was very interested in indoctrinating my sister and me into the culture pronto. We started playing mas in primary school in Kiddie's Carnival, but one of my proudest days was when I was old enough to play "Big Mas". The first time I crossed that Savannah stage (under Mommy's ever watchful eye) I thought I had died and gone to heaven! My sister and I still play mas and fete with our parents to this day.

Need name suggestions for this horse?

Hi everyone. I need some great suggestions for names for this AQHA foal. Here are the requirements:

20 characters max, include spaces

Grandfather is the great horse Luke At Me

Sire is: Leavin em lukin

Dam is: Marina Del Rey

Name must contain some reference to Luke or Lukin. Something that shows who the grandsire or sire is. You can also use some of the dams name, as long as the Luke or Lukin is there. Play on words is fine, like "Luke But Don't touch"...things like that. Just be careful of the 20 character rule for AQHA.

I would really appreciate it! This is a super bred horse and needs a name to be proud of at major shows. Thanks for our time and god bless.

I have purchased this horse for the big shows. It is in utero, so can't go on color, but it will most likely be bay, black or small possibility of sorrel.

(Just wanted to add: I also own a great grade gelding who has made me proud at open shows. I love you, Riley and I will NEVER sell you. : )

Horse color coat difference?

Whats the difference from a Sorrel horse, and a chesnut? I'm trying to figure out my horse (that was sold without my permission) what his coat color was. He was a paint. But he didn't look it.

Horse color coat difference?
The sorrel color is a coppery red, while the chestnut is a brownish red.

Check here....

http://www.aqha.com/association/download...
Reply:Chesnut is a darker brown, sorrell has a redish tint to it, I believe. How do you mean he didn't look like a paint? Did he have large white patches, as well?

Sorry to hear he was sold without your knowledge. That is an awful feeling.

Good Luck and Take Care
Reply:A Sorrel has a lighter mane
Reply:They are basically the same color...chestnut usually have the same color mane and tail, but the sorrel have a cream colored mane and tail...the sorrel tends to have a lighter red (copper) coat and the chestnut can get very dark.

Do a search for paint horse colors, and compare your horse to the colors offered.
Reply:A chestnut is the same color all over (reddish brown) (mane and tail) a sorrel has a black tail and mane, and usually some white on it's face.
Reply:The names are interchangable, different registries will call them one or the other, but it is still the same color (a shade of red, light or dark).

well she is a sorrel mare and she is about 15.2 hands and the jack is black and is over 15 hands tall...i was wondering would it be a big mule and what color do you think it would be??

Im Wanting To Breed My Mare With A Jack??
The foal will likely be big like its dam and as far as color,it could be sorrel or black and maybe (if you are lucky) a dun.
Reply:Since genetically, black is the dominate color, I would imagine the colt to be black, but anything is possible. It should be about 15 hands.

Does anyone know anything about sarcoids in horses?

i just had surgery done on my 17 yr old sorrel mare about six months ago and i'm noticing that they are coming back again(in the same areas on her sides and now on her neck).

the sarcoids that where removed were not cancerous(i had them tested) and were just under the skin, not into any muscle.

i know that surgery is not a sure answer and that there is allways a chance of them returning.

where can i get info on the cause and (possible) cures for them.

i don't think it's from her feed. i drive 50 miles round trip, twice a month for alfalfa because it's the best i have found. i put corn oil on her feed in the winter(to help keep her warm) and table salt also to make sure she drinks enough water. carrots every nite before dinner plus lots of apples and treats.

am i over doing it? i hope not. i had to watch my fist horse die(broken leg) and i don't want to do that again.(i wasn't going to let the last thing she saw be a stranger,it was going to be the one who loved her most)

Does anyone know anything about sarcoids in horses?
maybe this will help ,good luck

Reply:you sound like a loving horse mom. But you need to educate yourself. (soemtimes we can love them to death) all the treats and stuff we give them are not always healthy for them. please check out www.horsehealth.com and www.equine.com these sites can help you. table salt is a BIG no no buy a mineral salt lick from the feed store. Why are you feeding alfalfa? is she under weight? does she not have access to grass? horses do not need alfalfa unless they are working very hard or are hard to keep weight on. (other reasons too) but what type of feed? sweet,? check the protein % also PLEASE switch to wheat gern oil or even bran for winters not corn. carrots are NOT normal horse feed. you love her that is obvious but please educate yourself, your feed store rep can help and so can your vet. good luck. what type of work/riding do you do with her? I hope she gets better. also take into account the weather..hot, cold this will affest her appetite and eating, working habits.

Reply:1. i have been riding on a regular basis since august 2006.

2. my horse's name is Chrome and her registered name (i don't show) is Bees Biankus Jet! my other is Teak, and i don't know what her registered name is cuz we never got her papers. my mom is trying to track sown the people.

3. chrome= gray, quarter horse, 2 hind socks, a shooting star brand on left shoulder, blaze, filly/ mare, 3 years old. teak= sorrel, quarter horse/ arab, star and stripe, mare, 30!

4. i kinda know how to band, i can ride a bucking horse, while bareback! (how i did it i have no idea!), and yes a rearing one also. ( was on a trial; considering buying him; last week of trial he started having a rearing problem; almost flipped over).

5. i am a gamer! with chrome! i do barrels and poles also. we are pretty good for her age! ( 8.995 on stake... just can't get over it! 4th on key... 9.686!) ok i know we are on the slower side, but i usually get 6-8 when i don't dq and the pattern is not stake. teak is retired.

6. chrome is shod, teak is not.

7. i was going to do english so that i could jump, but where i went only did gaming, but i think jumping is fun, there are a few patterns with 18" jumps!

8. yes i do. my parents make me and i also don't want to risk getting hurt.

9. my horse is calm, but when i go into the lane to run a pattern, chrome gets so ancy, about a 6, cuz she just loves barrels, poles, and running!

10. yes, a horse has fallen on me before. actually it was on sunday! i was just at a walk and hit a muddy spot and chrome just went splat! while i was riding her! it was kinda scary. then i got all muddy. thank goodness i was riding bareback! we are both fine with no injuries, not even bruises, well not sure if chrome has a bruise or not, she's pretty tough.

11. chrome's halter and lead are burgundy, same with teak, but she also has a black and blue halter and a green lead, which ever one i see laying around first is the one i use.

12. i only use a saddle blanket ever so often, but the color of it is burgundy.

13. chrome is 14.3 hh the last time i checked but could be 15 hh now, seems like she got a little taller since april. teak is around 14.1/ 14.2 ish. she is not any shorter or taller.

14. i kinda rescued a horse, not really. chrome was going to be a broodmare all the time that the previous owner was going to have her, but was for sale cuz she didn't really need her. teak- my neighbors were moving, and couldn't take her with them. what was weird was that they weren't horse people, so they didn't know nothin bout horses, so they said that she was going to slaughter if we didn't get her.

4. What do you mean by band? I know how to ride both a bucking and a rearing horse.

5. Now that I'm too old for 4-H, I just trail ride for pleasure. I'd like to get a good Quarter horse and possibly enter some barrel racing competitions, but we'll see how that pans out.

6. He's been shod in the past, but currently isn't, and probably won't be again.

7. I'd love to do jumping.

9. He's pretty calm, but at the canter, jumping, and shows he's hot.

10. Thankfully, a horse has never fallen on me.

He has a red, white, and blue halter and red lead rope. My saddle pad for showing is white, bu thte other is teal with cows on it! He's 15.1 or 2. I've never like adopted/rescued, I have helped a horse when he was in the crossties and a horse cam eup and bit him and he freaked and fell over twice. He wouldn't move, so I had to walk him for a while so he wouldn't get stiff.

Great poll!

I have 2 horses, their names are Falco and Harvey ( Wallbanger)

Faco is Irish draft x thoroughbred, chestnut with 2 white socks at the back and a squiggly blaze. Harvey clydesdale x and is bay with black points and 4 white socks and a blaze. Falco's about 15 and Harvey is about 13

We do hacking ( trail riding ) mostly, bit of jumping no competitions.

They are both shod at the front only.

I'd like to do more dressage.

I always wear a helmet.

Usually they are fairly sensible but Falco tends to be spooky and Harvey likes to race.

Never been fallen on but Harvey is a klutz and trips over his own feet sometimes - he once fell from under me when I was riding in the field. Falco fell on my friend when she was schooling him - she wasn't hurt but won't ever ride him in the field again.

Halters - Falco black, same with his numnah

Harvey's is blue halter, green numnah.

-We used to shoe him, because being worked a lot made his feet sore, but now I'm at school and he doesn't get worked hard, so he's barefoot.

-One of my life goals is to show a big stepping saddleseat horse. Preferably arabians.

-I wore a helmet religiously until I was abot 17, and now only wear one when I'm jumping.

A good name for a mare?

She's a 10 year old unregistered barrel horse, sorrel coat, big brown eyes. I would like a name that flows nicely, and sounds good when you say it. I would like it to be western-ish, but it dosn't have to be. Here are a few I've thought of....

TAPS. How come I cannot find which season that TAPS went to Savannah?

I know they went to the Bader House (or Sorrel Weed house). The Moon River Brewing Co. and they even went to one of the cemetaries. It was the first-annual Halloween episode, but I cannot find it on the Sci-fi, Ghosthunter page which supposedly has all the episodes listed. HELP! I just visited Savannah and wanted to watch it again.

There's a site called www.tv.com where you can look up whice episodes occured during the seasons. iTunes also has episodes availble online, so it might be there as well.

Any good vegetarian versions of Caribbean dishes (using vegemeat is ok too)?

My parents are from St. Vincent but I don't know that much about Caribbean food. My mother decided our family would become vegetarian when I was little, so I grew up eating tofu and other health-food type things. I am familiar with a few things, like plantain, cassava, pulao, roti, pone, sorrel (drink) and tropical fruits. I am ok at cooking Indian food, and I know Indian cuisine has strongly influenced the food my parents grew up with (also African, French, Spanish, and South American influences can be found).

Anyway, I am going to visit my parents and I would like to cook a vegetarian Caribbean feast for them, including a drink, a dessert (or two) , one spicy main dish and one not-so-spicy main dish, and several sides. Particularly the kind of ingredients that they probably haven't eaten in years, that will remind them of childhood. I am willing to use vegemeat to substitute for meat, though I have never seen any vegegoat at the health store! Please share recipes/ideas.

Any good vegetarian versions of Caribbean dishes (using vegemeat is ok too)?
Here's a pretty good recipe for Jerk tofu:

1 pound firm tofu

1 cup vegetable stock

Pinch salt

1 clove garlic, minced

1 teaspoon thyme

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Jerk Sauce (see recipe)

Slice the tofu into bite-size pieces.

Bring the vegetable stock to a boil, adding salt, garlic and thyme. Add the tofu and simmer for 5 to 8 minutes. Remove tofu and drain on paper towels.

Sprinkle black pepper onto the tofu, then carefully roll the pieces in jerk sauce and set aside for at least 1 hour.

Place the tofu in the oven at low heat for about 3 minutes. Serve with jerk sauce.

Yield: 4 serving

Heat Scale: Medium

(Jerk Sauce Recipe)

12 habaneros, seeds and stems removed

3 onions, chopped

2 clove garlic finely chopped

1/2 cup vinegar

2 tablespoons ground allspice

1 tablespoon olive oil

1/4 cup soy sauce

1/4 cup minced scallions

It's actually really good. I tried the recipe a little while ago :)
Reply:I like Ital Stew. Curry Tofu and Brown Tofu Stew is also an option.

I found this recipe on the internet for Ital Stew. Ive included some websites. for drinks I would do Sorrel

Ital Stew (www.reggaefestivalguide.com)

Ingredients:

2 C dried beans (any kind)

2 medium Idaho potatoes

1 C diced yellow yams

2 medium sweet potatoes

12 medium okra

2 C fresh corn (cut kernels off cob)

3 medium carrots

3 stalks of scallions

3 cloves fresh garlic

1 small green Scotch bonnet (habanero) pepper

3 C natural coconut milk

1 T Soya margarine

7-12 pimento seeds (allspice)

7-12 pimento seeds (allspice)

3 pieces fresh thyme

2 C whole wheat flour

Fresh cilantro (garnish)

Directions:

Soak beans in distilled water overnight to remove the gas. Chop garlic and thyme and dice remaining vegetables. Put beans to boil with scallions, pimento seeds, thyme, garlic, and pepper. Add coconut milk to boil along with beans until fully cooked, then add vegetables to the pot. Knead flour with a little water to make small dumplings (spinners). Add spinners to pot and boil until cooked. When stew starts to thicken, add soya margarine and simmer to flavor. Garnish with cilantro. Serve with brown
Reply:Check out recipes.com or other recipe websites for both caribbean and vegetarian recipes. If you don't find something specific, look at recipes made with meat and substitute tofu or other things for the meat portions. Just do a websearch for recipes, vegetarian caribbean recipes, etc. Hope you find what you need.

What is the Difference?

I dont understand where chestnut and sorrel seperate. You can have a light chestnut and a dark sorrel and to me they honeslty look the same I dont understand the difference between the two colors. Are there easy ways spot to difference? I know what a liver chestnut is though that is easy to tell but the lighter shades get me confused

What is the Difference?
In Europe, they are always called chestnut and I'd never even heard the term "sorrel" until I worked with QH's. They are the same color, just a different term and I think sorrel seems to be a term used more by people involved with western riding.
Reply:Kayla, I would have called your second horse a sorrel also! Just the difference in what we see I think. To me a Chestnut horse is almost dark brown. I just can't explain it. Sorrel is the copper penny color.

This link shows the different colors

http://www.rnbquarterhorses.com/qhcolors...
Reply:It confuses me as well. I have been told by several people that they're basically the same thing, but different breeds are called either one or the other for some reason. I'm sure you could trot a chestnut and a sorrel up in front of me and ask me what color they were and I'd call them both chestnut.
Reply:there is no difference. but in my opinion, sorrel refers to the red ones, and i mean like fire engine red, like my horse. (ok fine, not literally red like a fire engine but ya know what i mean)
Reply:I know that sorrels have to have a sorrel mane and tail
Reply:sorrel is more of a reddish copperish color like a penny!!! and i believe depending on the breed sometimes the same color is called something different like if you had a paso fino who was a sorrel they would call it chestnut you see??? my qtr mare is a sorrel and she is the really shiny copperish color with the strawberry blondish colored mane and tail so..... hope that helps a little!!!!
Reply:As a Morgan horse breeder, they do not have sorrel, only chestnut. The only time you see sorrel it is with Quarter horses.

alot of times it is hard to tell the difference, but if you know what to look for, you can. chestnuts are more of a bolder/darker reddish, sorrels are more of a orangish/copper. if that made any sense at all. lol

and by the way, a good 70% of all my horses are sorrels, and not one of them have a dorsal stripe..not sure where that came from..??
Reply:Basically, chestnut and sorrel are the same. Different breed associations have different names for the same colors. If you are looking for the color of a spefic breed, check that breed registry's website to see which term they use.
Reply:Basically the difference is the discipline. Western they call it sorrel English type riding its chestnut. Some people vary it by shades but all in all they are the same genetically.
Reply:I know part of the difference includes the presence of a dorsal stripe (a darker stripe along your horse's backbone) for sorrels. Beyond that, I'm not sure, sorry.
Reply:chestnut has a darkered colored tail i think??

Problem with a/c

Is anyone familiar with the LJSR bloodline?

my AQH sorrel mare LJSR APRIL CAN, has a sire of LJSR CHEEKIE and a dam of TRISHA CAN

Is anyone familiar with the LJSR bloodline?
thats a ranch/breeder prefix and not a bloodline. ranches and breeders use prefixes to promote their breeding programs. that way if a foal they've produced ever wins any big show classes people will know where that foal was produced and buy or breed to their horses in the future

**to find out which farm she came from look at the breeder name on her papers. then do a general search for the breeder's name. you should have no trouble tracking her back to the original breeder. then you can look at their stock and learn more about the types of horses they produce

Training a pesky filly?

I just bought a new 2 year old AQHA reg. sorrel filly. SHE IS HUGE! It's quite intimidating. She's young and already around 16 hands. She is really responsive and very kind. She just has a leading issue. She likes to turn her head and take off. And no matter how hard I try to pull, she, quite easily mind you, rips the rope from my hands and hauls butt. I don't really know why she does this...I, as a horse, wouldn't like to be lead around but, this habit needs to break. It's dangerous to the other horses with a baby running around the whole time. Some people have advised using a stud chain around her chin, although I don't want her to get face shy because she's yanking on that. What to do? Please let me know. I've worked with A LOT of horses and broke many more, however this is one issus where my teaching tactics haven't solved. Looking for more input. Thanks!

Training a pesky filly?
Linny:

You sound like you have given this a lot of thought, and its certainly not your first horse to train.

My best friend just got paid a sack of cash to condition a 3 year old stallion to be kind, not bite, and lead nicely by anyone be they good with horses or just ranch help. Her secret? Horses DO like to be lead, they outweigh us by a great deal, and ten minutes a day of voice commands rewarded with banana chips, carrot pieces and pats on the withers worked great. It gets their head down and into a chewing happy "all is well" feeling they will associate with you.Its not bribery, its using their behavior for both your advantage. It makes sense, and it is easy.

Lead always from the horses girth area,as opposed to his head. When your in front or at the halter its too easy to pull you around.,and you ride from the girth so, lead from there too. She used a padded crown halter and avoided all pain.

Reward "easy" :whoa" " waaaalk" and OK! with a pat to his shoulder. This is where you are really in control, be you 100 pounds or a musclebound brute. This works for all the pushy problem children, do give it a go. I like that you care about the danger of a loose horse too.

Have a lot of fun with your new beautiful sorrel Linny
Reply:Clinton Anderson, Pat Parelli, Chris Cox, and Craig Cameron have excellent DVDs/videos, books, clinics, and TV shows that deal with teaching respect on the ground. Google their names and you'll find their websites.

http://downunderhorsemanship.com/catalog...

http://www.chris-cox.com/Merchant2/merch...

These trainers have humane, safe, time-honored methods that work with any horse. Recommending these DVD's/Videos is safer than trying to tell you what to do not knowing your ability or seeing the horse.

Please don't ride your filly until you have the leading issue under control. A horse that is this disrespectful of you when you are doing something as simple as leading her is a time bomb under saddle. She's young and needs work. She's learned that she is bigger than you, and knows how to use it. She's stiff and either didn't learn or doesn't care to give to pressure. Having control of your filly on the ground is crucial to any other work you will do with her. If she doesn't lead well, back up without pressure, and give her head, shoulders, and hips from the ground, she will not do them correctly under saddle. If she is not a problem to ride now, it is only a matter of time before she decides to ignore your commands and do what she wants when under saddle. Trust me, I've retrained WAY too many horses that were dangerous to ride because nobody ever taught them control and respect from the ground.

I'd use a quality rope halter (double diamond is a good brand, or the trainers I mentioned above sell them through their websites, too) and a long lead made of yacht line. This material is easy on your hands, won't jam when tied, and has enough weight to be able to effectively communicate with your horse.

If you try the stud chain, be VERY certain the filly can't pull away from you. If she does, she's going to be even harder to work with the next time. Used properly, a stud chain can quickly teach a horse respect without injury. Used incorrectly, it teaches the horse headshyness, rearing, and that it can get away from you no matter what you use.
Reply:Here is a couple choices that I have tried:

One option you might try is a rope halter or come along halter. The rope halter gives more pressure on the poll which gives you more latitude to control her. I use a rope halter on all my weanling, yearlings, two years olds to give me that little more edge when handling them. When you tie them to stand it also helps if they have any pull back issues with the pressure being on top of their head instead of nose area. She sounds like a great filly at 16 hands already!! and a sweet filly for her size.

The stud chain could be a good idea I usually use it over the nose then the filly won't go over backwards when the pressure is applied I think some horses putting under the chin makes their head go up in the air and you risk them going over backwards. Light pressure on the top of the nose with the chain may give you the little extra strength you need to break her of this. I don't think any human can fight a filly that big and be the one still standing:) You wouldn't need to be strong handed with the chain, just a bit of pressure.
Reply:You don't say what halter you are using, but I would definately put a rope halter on her and fit it correctly. Those along are awesome training tools. Take her in an enclosed area first and work with her on verbal commands reinforcing with the halter. I would have her walk/trot/back etc and have her good and solid in that area.

Then take her out, wear gloves and use a cotton lead rope. Again, go through her walk/trot/back etc. If at any time she bolts, you need to flip her around to face you and walk off again.

Repetition helps and shes just seeing boundaries.
Reply:Be ready when you lead her and when she turns her head yank it in the opposite direction and knock her on her butt. sooner or later she will get annoyed and will stop but keep persistancy and you will avail.
Reply:i know its hard to do but u really need to put a stud chain on her till she breakes the habit... heres a little trick also when u feel her terning to run turn that way also and walk that way a couple steps then turn her back around do a full circle it kinda confuses them.... i dont belive that a stud chain will make her face shy i use them on my stud colts and missbehaivin fillys all the time.
Reply:Hi, Your filly sounds like a typical 2 year old still learning the ropes (no pun intended) :-). Poll pressure is very effective in teaching to stop on the ground, but in your situation increasing poll pressure will make her either lift her fore off of the ground or cause her to bring her head down as I am sure you know, so you have to use it sparingly. Constant poll pressure will not stop her from turning her head and running, since she is already used to running off and already understands that she is stronger than you at this point, this hard handed poll pressure may only agitate her and force to simulate the same action again.

Remember always that horses respond to fight or flight. Her choice is fight and then flight. The more pressure you apply to her, the more she is going to want to get her head away from you and use her fight/flight reactions.

If and only she doesn't fear you, I recommend walking her in a small round pen or stall run on a halter without the lead and when she does try her little thing automatically release her, turn your back on her and walk away a few steps, don't fight her, then go back catch her and work on the same thing but use care not to overdo it so much that she gets sour. Its also important to remember to work off of the same side everyday since the horses corpus collosum or the center area that attaches and transmits information between the two brain hemispheres is weak. Therefore it is harder for them to transfer information from left to right and right to left. Stay steady on one side and then move onto the other side when she masters off side. Stay tuned into the movement she uses before she wants to run off, maybe she moves her ears a certain way or tenses up her hind and begins to try to flex the neck. When you see these signs of anticipation, immediately release her, turn your back away from her and walk away.

Work according to her temperament everyday or at the point that you think her mind can handle what you are teaching her effectively. When she stops fighting and flighting, (which she should when she realizes there is nowhere fun to run or if and when she becomes bored with her routine) then reward her after she does well and stops pulling away, I hate to say utilize it, but give a handful of grain. (In the meantime, if you have her on grain as a feed, take her off of it until she sees the grain as a reward and not as a meal.)

After she has realized she has nowhere to, put her on the lead rope allowing for praise with grain for a few minutes and move her neck with the rope, try to get her to flex her neck. Take the lead off walk away and finish your session. After flex start taking small steps with the praise still involved. You want her to see the lead as a something that accompanies praise so it may be good to start brushing her while keeping slack in your lead rope. Work with her on the rope for a few minutes everyday teaching her to respond to pressure when you apply it. When she is walking the length of a stall run or a round pen and not pulling away from you, then start to take her out into an enclosed paddock using the lead and halter and see if she tries her risky business again. She shouldn’t .

But.. If she does, and your area is enclosed, don't immediately go run after her but let her come to you. It may take some time, a long time even, but she will eventually come to you looking for the grain or hay. When she comes to you. Pick up the lead and walk her back to her stall, you may want to leave the lead on, make sure you have a safe halter and no places where she can freak and get tangled. I had a horse learn to stop fighting the lead using his own weight. He ran off in a paddock, wouldn't let anyone catch him and two days with the lead on, he learned to respond to halting pressure. He eventually began to think that his own weight was the force behind the rope and he stopped pulling. Allot of old cowboys have been known to do the same thing. They turn a horse out with a lead for a few days and the lead might come back busted but a new one is attached and eventually they learn to stop resisting pressure.

You can also try to teach her not to pull away from pressure by tying her to a solid hitching post and using the inner tube. This and I would say a stud chain are last resort. Stud chains are used for control not for flighty horses. If you have that stud chain on there, and she fights it and manages to get lose, you have a problem on your hand because she can step on the stud chain which has a ton more pressure behind it than a nylon or rope halter and she may end up breaking her noseband or possibly bruising the poll area. This would lead you to problems in the future with bridling and poll pressure.

I am sure there are several ways to go about this, these are just a couple of ideas that I know to more than likely succeed if you work at it and go about it while really paying attention to your filly’s anticipations.

Best of luck! I really hope you can find something that works for you and your girl!
Reply:Ok, another one that I hate to respond too. Your getting a lot of responses and some pretty good too! But, let me state what I see as detrimental (please don't be attack dogs now). First... treats, avoid the heck out them. I don't care if it makes the horse "act" like it loves you. They still won't pick you up, no matter how many treats, if they buck you off...etc, etc, ) Second, on a young horse... don't do chains or cheap tricks unless you want to continue adding harsh devices. These are sensitive responses that you are deadening.

As already said, stay behind the head, by the shoulder/girth area. At this location you have full control of that horses body... in most situations. "check" your filly the minute she thinks about "playing". When she gets ahead of you, step away, plant your feet and pull!!!, Yank that head around and let her know you mean it when you say, NO. Pulling them around, hard, takes them off balance and they loose control to an extent, for a moment. If they freak, they may go over backward, just remember.... yank, get a response and stop pulling on them, give them room to stop and look bewildered. FORGET IT at this point and go about your business until you need it again. (Stallion owner, with over 100 years, combined, experience with studs, colts and a lot in between!) P.S. Stop with everyone needing a dang round pen!!! PLEASE! Its a device, NOT a tool.
Reply:when I trained a gelding we would first lunge him so he was really tired then we would tack him up, and if he acted up we would lunge him again!or splatter an egg on her head when she takes off so she thinks she's bleeding!and after you get the tack on lunge her again then get on her!! I hope that helps!
