What is the difference between a sorrel and a chestnut horse??

It really depens on the situation - for example, most western people do not categorize their horses as chestnut at all, so all their blonde to reddish colored horses are sorrel. Most English people do not categorize their horses as sorrel at all, so all blonde to reddish colored horses are considered chestnuts. It also depends on the horse's breed, as certain breeds produce only certain colors, or can only be registered as a partiuclar color. For example, the Jockey Club does not allow Thoroughbred racehorses to be registered as sorrel, and you won't find any sorrel registered warmbloods. But you will probably find a bazillion quarter horses and arabs registered as chestnuts that are more closely sorrel than anything.

The AQHA color guide called a chestnut horse one with reddish to reddish brown colored body, and has either a darker mane %26amp; tail or a flaxen mane and tail.

Funny thing is, they use the same description to describe a sorrel horse.

So really, a chestnut or sorrel could probably be interchanged arguably, or could also be two very distinct colors.

I looked around on Equine.com, and found two horse ads for the two colors.

Here is what I personally consider an example of a SORREL horse....typically seen in the Belgian draft breed, the Haflinger pony, and some quarter horses......Notice they have her listed as sorrel.

And here is an ad for a lovely example of a classic chestnut, typically seen in nearly every breed including Arabian, Quarter horse, paint, Thoroughbred, warmbloods, and any other breed of horse or popny.....

And, as with any other color in horses, there is a lot of variation within each color itself, from how dark or light the body is, to how dark or light the mane and tail are.

Reply:The chestnut is a deep red color mane and tail included where the sorrel(usually a western term) is reddish or light brown with a lighter color mane and tail anywhere from a shade or two lighter than the body to almost white.
Reply:the color
Reply:None, they are both a reddish brown color.
