I am 13, I bought a foal not too long ago, like in November,he is now going to be a yearling the end of May. He is great, a beautiful conformation, amazing talent, sweet disposistion, and learns fast. I was upset because when his owner was asked about the mother, which I have seen I think she was sorrel, she said "She's my AQHA mare". AQHA means registered right? Well I thought I could registerd him. I bought him and then was told he is immpossible to register. I found his mom for sale last week, and she is DEFINETLY registered, but I can't get ANY info on his father, his mom's name is Ima Star Jack Dunny. He is a Paint,Quater horse cross so I've been told,I think he's bred with more. But anyhow can I get him registered with the AQHA with only knowing his mother, and if so HOW do I prove she's his mother,if it's DNA or something be specific, just dont say "get DNA". I need to know and NOW!
Can a foal be registerd with only one AQHA parent?
If the sire was registered paint (APHA) and dam was registered quarter horse (AQHA) he can be registered paint no matter if he has color or not. He will be classed "breeding stock" on his paint papers, but not really worth it for a gelding.
In order to register you need the breeders certificate with stud and mare's reg # and name, etc on it. DNA samples would be done with hair samples from the foal. Honestly though, it is probably not worth it. The older the horse gets, the more costly it is to register them and you only have until they are 5 I believe. With no leads on the stud, name, registration #, owner, etc... good luck. I don't think you can do it.
If he is to be gelded and is a solid color than it is probably not that important to register him. Honestly, he will just be a "breeding stock" gelding, which means a paint with no color. (Unless he is colored, but still, as a gelding you will never breed him and probably not go to breed shows right?)
Reply:No you can't register your foal, both parents need to be registered. I have just bought a unregistered horse his father is registered but the mother is, so I am in the boat. It's unfortunate but unless your planning on keeping him as a stallion for breeding purposes there is really no need for him to registered. You can still get points in the show ring with him.
Reply:You have to know both parents in order to register with the AQHA

There is not a way to get around it - to be registered quarter horse, both parents must be registered. To be registered appendix, one parent must be registered quarter horse and the other registered to an approved breed (ie: arabian, thoroughbred)
Reply:No, there's no way you can do it without his sire being AQHA registered, too. Do you need to register the foal, though? Are you breeding or planning on showing at higher levels?
Reply:The father has to be AQHA registered for him to be registered.
Reply:"Mulegirl" is correct...shoot for a paint/pinto registration.
Reply:Nope if only ONE parent is AQHA then AQHA will NOT register the foal. BOTH parents HAVE to be AQHA. You said sire was a Paint, does your colt have any colour? If so, you CAN register him through "Pinto Horse Assoc".
I found that out the hard way when Model Quarter Horse Assoc. folded in the late 1960's and I got stuck with a then two year old MQHA elgible gelding who's grand sire was Nick Shoemaker...:::Sigh:::
Reply:. . . And obviously the mare's owners are not going to divulge information about the sire. The dam has good bloodlines 3-4 generations back, 3 crosses to Two Eyed Jack. Leo, top and bottom, a line to Three Bars.
Their reasons are their reasons. Might have been an accidental breeding, a dispute with the stallions owner, a stolen breeding, a divorce dispute. . . The bottom line is, unless you have/get a breeder's certificate AND a stallion report recorded by the APHA, ain't no body gonna register your colt. Sorry, you got a rough deal.
If you're so taken with him AND got the show bug, sharpen your skills now and next time, make sure you get your papers in order before paying up.
Reply:You can't register your horse with the AQHA, but there other registries in which he might e eligible. Do a search for "Half Quarterhorse Registry", I found lots of entries. My favorite was Thundering Hooves Registry (half quarterhorses accepted), and also search for, "Half Paint Registry". The CRHA (Colorado Rangerbred) traces to a particular bloodline, you might be eligible for that also. Good luck, there's more than one place to register a horse.
