We just bought a wonderful family mare. Great with kids. The seller's going to drop off her papers next week. (papers weren't important to us, anyways.) Said she is double registered. I know she's quarter horse, but I can't figure out what the other registry would be. She is all sorrel except for three white socks and a blaze? Oh, will I have to transfer her papers to my name? How does that work? Thanks!
New "double registered" horse?
She may be registered with NFQHA (National Foundation QH Assoc.) or other similar registries. Another example is NRHA (Nat'l. Reining Horse Assoc.). There are a lot of registries that you can have your horse in if they are eligible, but don't have anything to do with the breed.
EDIT: Sorry I missed the last question about transfering. You will definitely have to transfer the horse to your name. This is how the registry keeps up with the horse. You will be given a transfer form by the previous owner (or should be, anyway) which you will then need to fill out and mail back in (the address will be on the form)...along with any fees required. If you are not a member of the registry where the horse is registered, then you might need to pay for like a year's membership or something in order to be able to transfer. Then there's a transfer fee on top of that, but if I remember correctly it isn't that bad...maybe $20-$25.
I can't remember if you need to send the horse's actual papers back with the transfer form..I'm pretty sure you do. They will then send it back to you with your name on the list of owners, which will be at the bottom if it's AQHA. That's it!
Reply:YES, you'll have to transfer the papers into your name. Sounds like she's AQHA (American Quarter Horse Assoc) and probably FQHA (Foundation Quarter Horse Assoc). The later tries to get as little TB blood in their horses as possible. You can go to AQHA.com and look up the charges for membership and transfer.
Keep her papers in order, you may NOT always have this mare and her papers mean $ and better home for her if you have to sell her.
Reply:It is possible APHA. They can be double registered depending on certain things. To register Paints as quarterhorses, their family trees have to have registered quarter horses, and the horse has to have almost no spots, etc. Supposedly if you have a registered paint it is very difficult to register as QH also, but it is done. Our old gelding that passed was a solid paint. Did not have a speck of white on him. Someone else at our barn has a chestnut that has a sock or two and she's registered QH and Paint and you can't even tell she could be a paint. So that is possible. You'll find out when you get the papers. There is information on the back where they sign off and you send it in with the required fees.
Reply:She could be register 1/2 Arabian, paint, foundation, gee could be a lot, guess you'll have a surprise:) One the back of the papers make sure the owners sign off and you'll sing and send in it'll cost a small amount. Enjoy, and just a heads up you may never see the papers, it happens alot. Glad they aren't important to you.
Reply:She could be double registered as a breeding stock paint, or as a foundation quarter horse.
WHen you buy a new horse, you always want to transfer them into your name. You will have to pay to become a member of AQHA, then pay for the transfer. The person you are buying the mare from will have the paperwork, or you can print it from the AQHA website, www.aqha.com
When you're a member, you can also do up to $10 of free pedigree research...so you can find out info about your new mare's relatives. Its really interesting.
Reply:When he hands you the papers (transfer papers), signed by him, you will then fill them out and send them in to the AQHA with the fee (its on the papers)
See link below
Once you get them back she will be registered in your name.
Double registered...thinking maybe she is also APHA?
(paint)
see link below
You'll see it on her papers.
If you know her registered name now, check on ALL BREED PEDIGREE (link below) and find out more on her.
Reply:double registered means that she has papers in 2 different organizations, that is real good!
and when you receive the papers there will be a address that you will mail the papers to with your name and signature and the sellers this will also include a fee.
its a piece of cake piece of pie!
and congrats ☺
Reply:I have some horses that are double registered AQHA and APHA. (Yes, that is possible.) Then I also have some of my Quarters registered in various foundation clubs. There are also color registries that some people chose to register their horses with.
