Why is my horse changing colors?

I bought my buttermilk buckskin in January 2007 when he was 10 years old. He had dark hair on his neck and it faded when summer came. Last summer he was almost white, but this summer he's changing to a sorrel brown color. I have never seen him this color before. It's really pretty, but I'm curious if this has happened to anyone else before. Anyone know what's going on? Thanks a bunch!

Why is my horse changing colors?
My horse has changed colors three times! When I got him he was bleached out from great sun exposure and was the color of a Nez Perce. When the season changed from summer to fall, he turned a dark coffee color with just a hint of cream (he's sabiano which is often confused with roaning, hence the cream) as his coat grew in - it seemed like it happened literally over night! Wild! The change was amazing. He got darker and darker and we think it was due to all the nutrition he was finally getting. I recently clipped him and he looks like a grayish-brownish-mauve. Yeah, sounds really weird, I know. The darkening of your horse's coat probably come from all the good stuff you feed him! Plus love. Sounds beautiful.

Reply:i had a palomino that changed colors throughout the seasons...it was really cool...in the winter he was very light almost white...and in the summer he was a very dark palomino color(just beautiful) and in spring in fall he was in between the two...dont worry it happens
Reply:sun-weather in general and a change in feed can all influence(to a degree) a horse's colour
Reply:I'm just guessing but from experience I'd say it is either from change in his environment or he is just a baby and is maturing. As a young(baby) horse matures he/she sheds the baby fur and the permanent color comes through after a couple years.
Reply:I all has to do with the sun, temperature, and rainfall where you live. I know that horses change coat colors when they shed after the winter, but if it is different than last summer's coat, then I guess it's just what happened.
Reply:Hair color changes with the amount of UV rays that the hair is exposed to. It's very likely that it's just the amount of sun it's getting. If you're really concerned about it call a vet.
Reply:is he the horse of a different color fon the wizzard of oz? no jk its cuz hes sheding.
