Im tottaly clueless about my 3 horses, some one help?

Last may my dad bought me 2 horses, but since I have had them, 1 has a philly so now I have 3.

But i'm pretty clueless when it comes to horses, I dont even know how to ride (well, not very good).

Anywho, I have noticed that the face of my sorrel quarter horse (Katy) is becoming darker, almost black %26amp; the same goes for her philly. The weather lately has been up in the 100's, could that be it??? Anyone, please answer but only if you know about horses.

Another question is: Do any of you know how to regester a philly? she was born in March.

Also taking suggestions on horse care. Like I said before, I don't really know anything about horses.

it means she is getting sun burned and will die
Reply:Horses can get sunburned, if you're concerned, or they seem uncomfortable you can try buying fly masks for them, the material also blocks out some of the sun. Horses need a lot of care. I suggest you go to an online book store or your library and get out some books on horse care. Be wary of older books that emphasize force in training--it's traumatizing to the horse and no fun for you either. Your goal is for your horses to trust you and also to respect you. Work with the filly every day, just going out to the pasture and petting her, feeding her, etc. will make for a good relationship between you two. Consider getting a subscription to a good horse care magazine and check out Pat Parelli's classes on horsemanship. Take riding lessons, getting your 'seat' so that your riding is comfortable for your horse takes time. Also don't be ashamed if you're just not that into riding. Riding at a walk on trails can be wonderful without mastering the posting trot, lead changes at canter, etc. If you enjoy just being with your horses in the pasture, you'll be a wonderful horse owner. There are lots of people who are only interested in riding competetively, and not in getting to know their horses. There are also a lot of horse lovers out there unable to own their own. Consider yourself lucky!

Also, I'm assuming the mare was bred when your Dad bought her. If not, get your stud gelded, raising horses is a big task for anyone and you'll have enough excitement with just this filly.
Reply:Filly...not philly.
Reply:so why again do you have horses....... i'm a little lost
Reply:you dont know how to ride..........yet your dad bought you 2 horses.....WTF
Reply:you might want to give them a bath and apply some sunscreen to any white areas since that's mostly where they will burn also if they are bunt aloe works wonders. also make sure you brush them a lot and be nice to them i suggest you read up on them some on the net at the library and you can even call your local vet
Reply:Wow. That's not a good situation. Raising foals take a LOT of experience, not to mention just owning any horse. Well, first off, you have a filly, not a philly, unless your horse gave birth to a cheesesteak. Your horse's faces might just be dark from sweating. Registering your filly might be a problem if you don't have the papers from the breeding and such. Contact the national breed club for your horses. (Like if they are quarter horses, the AQHA, or Tennesee walkers, the TWHBEA)

I personally feel the smartest thing for you to do is join your local 4H horse club. Call your local ag extension office for info aobut meetings and locations. You really need to learn as much as you can to care for your horses wisely, humanely, and safely. Horses aren't just big dogs. E-mail me if you want help finding places for you to learn.
Reply:First is a FILLY.

Second, you need someone to actually teach you. GO to a professional and take lessons on your horse. You really started backwards in all this and should of been somewhat knowledgable first and then bought your horses.

Horses don't come with instruction books, so its your job to be knowledgable when you have them, preferably before.

Go take lessons, best thing you can do. IF you dont have the money, sell the horses.

As far as color change, who knows. Could be shedding out, could be sun burn, could be anything. If your that worried a vet visit would be extremely beneficial at least for no other reason to make sure you are properly caring for your horses needs.
Reply:u do sound pretty clueless. i love horses, and their coat color can change through the seasons. usually in the winter they go dark and in the summer they are bleach by the sun, which is wierd. if you havent already, ask ur dad, or the breeder where u got them. it would be smart to go to a vet, and get them to check them out. it may just be a female thing, beacuse it is mother daughter. phillies do change colors when they are young.
Reply:well i have a horse and his color has goten darker only because of sweat, the sweat can dry up and make it look darker but it also turns white after a while if you dont groom him.but what you should do is go some place and learn how to ride and take care of horses. look on the internet for somewhere close to you.im not sure how to register a philly. but do u even no how to proberly groom him? and brush him tail from top and slowly work down doin sections at a time so the hair wont come out??????? if you have anyyyyy questions be really free to email me at fatlouly@yahoo.com i will answer anything.
