I want to know if it is natural for older horses to shed down to their skin.?

She is a registerd QH mare, and 22 years of age. I got her from some people who jst had her as a pasture buddy. I got a gelding with her, and he isn't shedding like she is. Rio, as we call her, is a sorrel mare, but is shedding to what seems to be her skin. I want to know if this is normal for older horses. I have 3 other horses, and none of them are doing this, but are also younger, so I think that it is an older horse thing. We have all of the horses on Flax seed also, to improve their coats, just because all of them are rescued and have terrible skin and coats...Thanks for anything.

maybe if the skin is to old but never heard about this

Reply:No age should not have anything to do with it( I mean it would not cause it but the horses immune system might be not as good as a younger horse) I have had horses live into their 30s and they had great coats with proper nutrition. It could be rain rot, usually horses who are kept outside in all weather with malnutrition get it. Bathing, brushing and good nutrition go along way.
Reply:I dont think that is normal I would call the vet because when the horse sheds it could be a sign of a disease I'm not positive but U should prob call the vet
Reply:Check with your vet. Age shouldn't cause a horse to lose all of its hair. Other factors that COULD cause it include hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficits and a myriad of skin conditions.

A call to your vet should be free, and you can discuss regional factors, such as low selenium levels, that would pertain to your particular region. He may have some insight if he's seen a lot of similar cases in your area.
